Below are the street segments in the Des Moines Area MPO region that are identified as part of the high-risk network or the high-injury network. Please review the maps and place comments on the road segments that you feel should be the highest priority for the Des Moines Area MPO region.

Map 1: High-Risk Network

Below are the street segments in the Des Moines Area MPO region that are identified as having a high-risk for serious injury or fatality crashes. One of the most important reasons we conduct crash data analysis is to understand the factors – speed limit, number of lanes, road classification, etc. - of the local roadway network that are most commonly linked to serious injury and fatal crashes. Using past crash data and the knowledge of these factors, a High-Risk Network (HRN) was developed, including rural areas. The HRN includes roads that have had and may have (if their current conditions - e.g., traffic volume, speed limit, number of lanes, lane use, etc. – don’t change) the highest risk of fatal and severe injury crashes for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists.

Proactive Approach - where there is a high risk associated with roadway characteristics.

Map 2: High-Injury Network

Below are the street segments in the Des Moines Area MPO region that are identified as the high-injury network. A high-injury network (HIN) represents the roadways with the highest concentrations of fatal and serious injury crashes. The HIN is a data-driven approach to identifying priority streets where crashes have occurred, where safety improvements, education, and enforcement should be focused for the greatest impact.

Reactive Approach - where more severe crashes have occurred.
