I would love to see the city recognize that the living world around us has a right to space and to exist just like we do, and incorporate into development accordingly. The family of sandhill cranes that has nested in the South District for decades shouldn't be evicted to make room for more housing. Birds that migrate through the area deserve safe places to stop and rest. Rusty-patched bumblebees and Monarch butterflies deserve places they can live, too.
Preserving open spaces for plants and animals, and incorporating wildlife corridors that connect natural spaces (like the South Sycamore Wetlands > TTRA) seems like a small lift that can make a huge difference.
Everyone wants to live close to nature, but building those developments that encroach on habitat degrade the area for everyone except those doing the building and taking over that land. We should strive to be inclusive and protective not just of vulnerable human populations, but vulnerable plant and animal populations as well.
